Worcestershire County Cup
Redditch United can confirm that the club will not be entering this season’s Worcestershire County Senior Cup.
As an affiliated member of Birmingham County FA, Redditch United is mandated to take part in the Senior Cup competition of our affiliated County FA. Our participation in the Worcestershire County Cup in recent seasons, however, has been through invitation which this year we have declined.
This has not been an easy decision, but the reasons behind our withdrawal this season predominantly come down to financial sustainability. This is a challenge faced by many county cup competitions across the country, and we understand that we are not the only invited club to withdraw from this season’s WFA competition for similar reasons.
Entering the competition requires the club to pay a registration fee, which is where the costs begin. Under the current format, Redditch United enters at the quarter final stage, meaning there is the potential for three additional fixtures.
Most of our recent fixtures in the competition have operated at a financial loss. Rising costs associated with player wages, match officials, staff and stewarding mean that these losses have become increasingly significant.
We have always taken the competition seriously. In two of the last three seasons, Redditch United has reached the final. On both occasions, the club was surprised to find that there was no financial compensation for reaching, or indeed winning, the competition. Worcestershire FA retains 100% of the gate receipts from the final, meaning the costs of preparing and paying our playing squad for the fixture have been met entirely by the competing football clubs.
It is important to make clear that this decision is not based on a desire for Redditch United to make a profit from the competition. We fully understand that cup football does not always generate a financial return. However, the reality is that participating in the competition over recent years has cost the club thousands of pounds. Under the current structure, entering the competition this season would guarantee a financial loss, and that does not align with our commitment to operating sustainably.
We have also become increasingly concerned about the competitive structure and credibility of the competition. Worcestershire FA affiliated clubs are mandated to take part and, as member clubs, have the opportunity to host the final.
This has created an unusual situation whereby there can potentially be greater financial benefit to a club in hosting the final than there is in winning the competition. The host club receives a fee for staging the fixture and has the opportunity to generate additional revenue through bar and catering sales.
Last season’s final provides an example of this situation. Evesham United hosted the fixture and benefited from the hosting arrangements and additional secondary spend, while Worcester City won the competition but still faced the costs associated with fielding and paying a competitive squad without any income from the gate to help cover those costs. As finalists in previous seasons, Redditch United has experienced the same situation.
In recent seasons, we have also seen clubs make the understandable decision to field weakened teams in the competition. Whether intentional or simply a consequence of fixture priorities, this raises legitimate questions about what incentive currently exists for clubs to fully commit to winning the competition.
Redditch United could have taken a similar approach and entered the competition with a significantly weakened side. However, we do not believe that would be fair to the competition or to our supporters. When fans pay to attend a fixture, they should be able to believe that the club is taking the game seriously and is genuinely trying to win.
There is also an important footballing consideration.
The additional fixtures come during an already demanding season and place further physical demands on our players. Last season, we missed out on the play offs by the narrowest of margins, finishing outside the play off places on goal difference.
It is impossible to say whether things would have been different without the additional Worcestershire County Cup fixtures, but three fewer games may have provided valuable rest and recovery for our players at key points during the season. Ultimately, achieving our league ambitions and competing for promotion must remain a priority.
This decision is therefore about ensuring that the club operates responsibly and sustainably, while prioritising the competitions that matter most to our long term ambitions.
We have enjoyed competing in the Worcestershire County Cup in recent seasons and have been proud to reach the final on two occasions. This decision should not be interpreted as a lack of respect for the competition or its history.
However, under the current financial and competitive structure, we cannot justify committing thousands of pounds to a competition where participation is likely to result in a significant financial loss.
We will continue to review our position in future seasons, but for this year, we believe withdrawing from the competition is the responsible decision for Redditch United Football Club.
