To the Supporters of Redditch United Football Club,
We felt it was important to share our thoughts with you following the news of Johnny Johnston’s imminent departure from our football club.
Johnny joined us last season as a relative unknown, having been playing his football four divisions below us after a brief stint at Blackpool. From the outset, JJ’s ambition was clear: to return to full-time football. Our club has provided him with the platform to develop, and his performances this season have been nothing short of outstanding. Not only have they captured the admiration of those on our terraces, but they’ve also drawn the attention of other clubs.
When JJ re-signed in the summer, he had a release clause in his contract to allow for progression if the opportunity arose. Unfortunately for us, that clause has now been met, and Johnny has decided to move on. While the fee involved is modest, we would have much preferred to retain his services. However, the inclusion of this clause was vital in securing his return to the club for this season.
We know our supporters will have wanted us to do everything possible to keep JJ, and we can assure you that we have. Over the course of the season, we have twice reached a verbal agreement on new terms, but sadly, we were unable to finalise it. More recently, we presented another offer – the most significant our time – but it wasn’t enough to prevent this move. If you agree that Johnny has been a standout player for us, you’ll also agree that he’s earned the opportunity to return to full-time football and test himself at a higher level.
Success in football often presents challenges. Having players excel and move on to bigger opportunities is part of the journey for clubs at all levels. However, by embracing this reality, we position ourselves as an attractive destination for the next young talent looking to progress.
For Johnny, we are both excited and grateful. We wish him every success in his future career and know he will always have the support of Redditch United. We have spoken to him personally, and he had some incredibly kind words about the opportunities and support he’s received here. Those words are priceless as we continue our search for the next emerging talent to help drive us forward.
It’s also important to acknowledge Johnny’s family, who have been an integral part of our Red Army. They’ve supported him – and the team – tirelessly across the country. We congratulate them as well as we part ways on the best of terms.
As we move forward, it’s worth remembering that we’ve been here before. When Max Sheaf left us for the Scottish Premier League 18 months ago, we felt a similar sense of loss. Yet, we rebuilt, brought in players like JJ, made the play-offs, and created new history. Matt was responsible for bringing in JJ and Max, I am sure he’ll be able to work his magic again as we rebuild.
The challenges we face now might feel greater, but in some ways, they’re not. Five seasons ago, The Reds were in a dire position, with over 20 consecutive losses and the spectre of relegation looming. Thanks to Covid, relegation was avoided, and Matt took over with a clear mission. Since then, we’ve come a long way, both on and off the pitch, and few could have predicted our current position back then. If our position now brings greater expectancy, we should all take that as a badge of honour.
What gives us confidence in our future is you – our incredible supporters. Sustainable growth and success depend on the passion and backing you bring to this club. This season, despite the challenges, we’ve maintained our record-breaking attendance figures from last year. Competing in a league with some very strong clubs and benefactors has been tough, but your loyalty remains our greatest asset.
As we’ve often said, it’s during tough times that you realise the strength of your support. Your backing is more important now than ever. Our door is always open, and I look forward to seeing you at today’s match as we bid farewell to Johnny and focus on securing those all-important three points.
